Side by side
| Product-market fit | Brand (promise) market fit | |
|---|---|---|
| Core question | Does the market want what we built? | Does the market believe what we stand for? |
| Evidence | Usage, retention, repeat purchase, organic demand | The promise appears everywhere, says the same thing, cannot be swapped onto a competitor, and customers repeat it unprompted |
| Failure looks like | Nobody needs it enough to pay or return | People buy, but cannot say why you over the next option, so price and convenience decide |
| Who owns it | Product and the founders | Everyone who writes, designs or speaks for the business |
| Typical stage | Seed | After product-market fit, or whenever the business has a public reputation |
Can you have product-market fit without brand fit?
Yes, and it is common. A business can sell well on convenience, price or a single referral channel while its website, listings and social profiles each say something different. That gap is invisible until a competitor offers the same thing, because nothing in the market's mind ties the outcome to you.
Can you have brand fit without product-market fit?
Briefly. A loud, consistent promise can attract attention, but if the product does not keep the promise, resonance turns negative. That is why the Sightbox sequence runs problem, then purpose, then promise.
How to tell which one you are missing
- Write your promise in one sentence. Try: "[Company] promises to [core benefit] for [audience] by [how]." If you cannot, start there.
- Check behaviour. Do people pay, use and return without heavy pushing? If not, work on the product first.
- Check language. Read ten reviews or mentions you did not write. Do they echo your promise, or describe something else?
- Run the swap test. Put a competitor's name in your sentence. If it still works, your promise is not yet yours.
What to fix first
Fix the lowest reading, not all of them. A Market Fit Read names the lowest of coverage, consistency, distinctiveness and resonance, the layer that moves it (Focus, Form or Fit), and the single highest-leverage move.

Questions
Is brand market fit just marketing?
No. Marketing is one surface. Brand fit is measured across every surface the market meets you on, and the only proof of belief that counts is what the market says back.
Which matters more?
Product-market fit comes first because without it there is nothing to believe in. After that, promise-market fit is what makes customers choose and recommend you rather than the cheapest equivalent.
